Was here for a volleyball tournament this past weekend. The parents, including myself, had a few choice words about this place. We were shocked to find that the parents and kids had to pay to get in. Why? Didnt the clubs, us parents poured a lot of money into, already pay to play? Our kids have been playing club volleyball for 4 years nd we NEVER had to pay to watch our kids play. The Courts should have been called the Freezer. It was so cold in there, you can hang meat. Parents were walking around in coats, hats, scarves and gloves, some draped in volleyball blankets. We might as well be watching a soccer match outdoors. There was one HVAC unit that barely warmed up one corner of the facility. They could have made some effort to warm up the place, after all we paid to get in, right? I cant even imagine how the players felt playing in their shorts. You are not allowed to bring outside food, because they want you to stand in line on their concession, order a chicken quesadilla and wait 10 minutes while they make it. This is unacceptable because the girls hardly have any break time to sit and eat. The eating area is very small outside the courts. You can eat in the green area inside the courts and freeze, your choice I guess. There were 16 teams plus parents/families, where are we suppose to sit? Because of lack of space, some girls were sitting on the stairs but were told to leave that area because there is a large group of people coming up and down the stairs from some other group using the 2nd floor facilities. Well, I did not see a soul. When the tournament was over, it was already dark. The parking lot was pitch black. We had to feel our way around the wet and muddy areas to get to our cars that are parked on the tennis courts. Thanks to this awesome venue, my boots were covered in mud. To sum it up, this is a terrible place to host a big tournament and i have no problem bringing our bad experience to the attention of CEVA.

disgusting, dirty, smelly dumphole! Past reviewers are correct in saying that in the real worl, Miss Vessy would find it very, very difficult holding a job if not for her dear daddy, Terry Emmert, being the owner. If anyone pays attention AT ALL, they know Mr. Emmert to be a blow hard, slum lord. So sad to see such a pretty, little club become what it has!

Eastmoreland Racquet Club is stuck in a death spiral from poor management, first its declining membership, then declining revenue, then declining maintenance and infrastructure, which leads to declining membership.

Just a little management could jumpstart this club.

Unfortunately it seems that only disgruntled employees or members have been the bulk of reviews for Eastmoreland on this site. I will give my review in hopes of balancing out the mood and possibly give a fair review of the club.

From my perspective the Staff at the club, especially the front desk, are awesome. They treat the member's with respect and are very member oriented. The picture painted of the Management is far off from reality. Obviously not every wish and desire can be granted and sadly there are people/ members who feel that way.

The club is an old building so of course some things tend to be outdated or tend to break from time to time. I have always seen them fixed usually within a timely manner. The roof for the indoor tennis courts does have a few leaky spots but it is only in a few random spots and does not effect your ability to play. The exercise equipment is definitely not state of the art but it still offers the same workout. They offer great fitness classes as well.

The club atmosphere is great. The members and Tennis Pro Amy make events and just regular days a blast. I would definitely recommend this club to anyone. No it isn't the newest or extravagant but if you are serious about tennis this is the place for you. There is always a team to join or someone to play with.

The up-side of belonging to a club that's a dump is that you can usually get a court. The members and most of the staff are really wonderful people. The two things I care about; the court surfaces and the pool, are excellent. Those are the only nice things I can say about my club. As a union member and shop steward in my job, I am DEEPLY appalled at the firing squad mentality of Christine, et al. I loved Alvina, Bob, Darrell, etc., etc... I now warn new employees to watch thier back and not be shocked at being summarily fired. We need a membership board to balance the inane and insane management. Such potential, such a waste... but at least I can get a court.

Ex-Member of Eastmoreland,

My wife and I were members of Eastmoreland several years ago (the basketball court on court 1 debacle was probably the last straw). I just stumbled across this thread and have to shake my head in sadness, though not surprise. This truly was the worst club I have belonged to in 20 years of moving around and playing at various clubs in the NW. Really sad to see it fall apart, and Terry Emmert is of course a travesty as an owner. As for Derin, he was a unique character, but from my perspective, a very very competent teaching pro. No tennis pro is perfect, but he had a great feel for the game, was a good friend to the members and juniors, and as a side note, was a helluva doubles player. There's a reason Alex Rovello and Jenya Whatever his last name was, kept coming back, along with many other quality juniors. If someone else would just buy the place, it's still got the potential to be amazing. Clay courts in the NW? A pool, a bunch of indoor courts, really cool members, space for a great workout area? I'd buy it myself if I could afford it. Somebody out there, do the Portland area a favor and buy this s**thole and turn it back into the club I remember it as a teenager.

We finally reached the end of our rope with ERC today. While the club is run down and some of the aerobic equipment has not been serviced in a long time, the greeter at the front desk was always pleasant and seemed interested in being helpful ... that is, until the new bar code scanner check-in system was installed. Despite assurances by different young men each weekend visit, we have been unable to procure scanner cards for our family on our weekend visits. Today's attempt to "help" was for the attendant to try to prove to me that we don't have a family membership by showing me the computer screen. So the computer shows is right and the members are wrong? We expected better, more personal service from our small neighborhood club. We will now seek a refund for the family membership we paid for but which is not being honored.

My advice to others: consider your other options before joinging Eastmoreland Racquet Club.

This club is one of the most run down clubs & least taken care of that I have ever been to. I have been a member of this club for over ten years, & I have seen them do repairs every year. (usually during the summer) I have also seen some of the dumbest mistakes made at this club. I'm sure many of us remember the basketball court & games on court one, right after resurfacing all the courts. What about retiling the mens room showers, making a mistake on the tile in shower 1 & instead of pulling the tiles out just tiling over the old tiles? What about the heat not working in the winter, & the building was so cold they had space heaters plugged in all over the place? I remember the giant hole in the outside wall that was there for years. I don't know who defamationdebunker is, but you can't be a member of ERC. Not one member had something bad to say about Alvena. She was one of the most caring people that worked at that club. She went out of her way to take care of us & we as members were very sorry to hear that they had let her go. I know for a fact that many of us complained (loudly) when we found out she was gone. Marc Desantis was right about something else, they do let management go every few years, does anyone remember Nancy, Jeanna, Darryl & Annebelle? They were all managers within the 6 years, & they to were wonderful people that as members we were attached to, they were let go.
I play tennis at ERC several days a week including mens night. Mens night has steadily declined since Derin quit running it 4 or 5 years ago.
In my opinion this club will never be as good as it used to be. They don't have the kind of money or membership that it would take to fix it up the way it should be. The best thing that could happen to this club is for Emmert to sell it. It's sad to see such a beautiful old club let go to a point of no return.
