The Organization…
The mission of the Wild Salmon Center is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. We devise and implement practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity.
The Wild Salmon Center is a $6M multi-national organization with a staff of 34. The Organization has operations in the Russian Far East, Kamchatka, the Olympic Peninsula, and on the Oregon North Coast, and on the John Day and Umpqua Rivers. The home office is located in Portland, Oregon in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center with satellite offices in Port Angeles, WA; and in Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia.
The State of the Salmon is a joint program between the Wild Salmon Center and Ecotrust. Located in Portland, it works to build the world’s most credible, comprehensive source of data and information on North Pacific salmon to inform salmon conservation and management decisions.
The Position…
Reporting to the State of the Salmon program’s Conservation Biologist, the Population Biologist’s principal objective is to devise and implement analyses for population status and trends for salmon at multiple geographic and biological scales, in the context of natural and anthropogenic variability. The State of the Salmon Program is completing the first phase of a North Pacific metadata inventory regarding long-term salmon monitoring data sets, and is now beginning to analyze and interpret the results. While the position is primarily technical in nature, an appreciation for the complexities of salmon conservation policy and the science-policy relationship in fisheries management is desirable.

• Experience using a variety of statistical techniques applied to understanding variability of biological populations in space and time
• Strong organization al skills and experience in managing large data sets
• Familiarity with the diversity of monitoring methods applied to salmon, their respective strengths and weaknesses, and how they are commonly used by fisheries managers and research scientists
• Familiarity with salmon policy debates, and the role of science in setting fisheries policy
• Excellent interpersonal communications skills, and demonstrated experience with peer-teaching and advising
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Commitment to the environment and to the conservation of salmon and their habitat
• GIS, Russian or Japanese language skills highly desirable, but not required.
Responsibilities…
The Population Biologist’s responsibilities are to:
• Analyze available data to assess trends in salmon abundance by species at varying spatial and biological scales of organization around the North Pacific, beginning with focused case studies
• Assist in standardizing, validating, and normalizing salmon monitoring data
• Assist the Conservation Biologist in the analysis of salmon monitoring metadata collected through an inventory across the North Pacific to assess species’, regional and data gaps in current monitoring efforts, and assist others in the production of policy-relevant syntheses of our current knowledge
• Provide consultation to the State of the Salmon team on a range of conservation issues.
Compensation...
The compensation package includes a competitive salary and excellent fringe benefits package, including 401(k) match, medical and dental plan, flexible spending account, life insurance and disability coverage is provided.
