Classroom Law Project

Portland, OR • 08/21/2007

Would you like a good excuse to hang out in the courthouse and observe

judges and

other attorneys practice their craft? Can you spare one morning a month?

Would you like

to tell students about what goes on in the Multnomah County Courthouse

and Justice

Center? Then, being a volunteer court tour guide for Classroom Law

Project is just for

you. Court tours begin again in October. More than 4000 students, grades

5-12, visit the

courthouse annually. Guides are needed to show them around.

Qualifications are:

=95 willingness to work with 30-50 children, parent chaperones, and

teachers with a

smile(!);

=95 one morning (8:30-noon) or one afternoon (12:15-3:00) a month;

=95 basic knowledge of court system and willingness to learn more.

New guides shadow an experienced guide a couple times to help them feel

comfortable

going out on their own. Guides are responsible for:

=95 contacting the teacher two weeks in advance of their tour

(scheduling is done by

the court administrator=92s office, not the guides) to go over details

of the day;

=95 calling judges=92 chambers on the morning of the tour to update the

docket;

=95 doing a brief orientation with the school group in the Gus Solomon

Courthouse

(the old federal courthouse where Classroom Law Project is located);

=95 leading the group to the Justice Center and then to the County

Courthouse; and

answering questions along the way.

Classroom Law Project provides the training for the guides plus the

docket, phone,

courtroom for orientation, and contact info for teachers.

There will be an orientation luncheon for tour guides (both new and

veteran) on Sept.

20, 2007, at the CLP office. Many court tour guides are former teachers

or other adults

interested in the judicial system. Being an attorney is not required

though obviously very

helpful. If you have friends who may be interested, please pass this

along.
